What my niece to be made me her school project…

My awesome Niece to be wrote some lovely things about me. She worked really hard and did her research and this was her school presentation…

Dwarfism

My topic for this term’s English ILT is something-I would expect-no-one has done before.
Today, I will be talking to you about something some of you will find hard to take in.
This is sad to say, but as I am reading to you, I can guarantee that in this next sentence, a lot of you will laugh. So, I will begin and see for myself. 7KE, I am about to tell you all I know about DWARFISM.
To be a dwarf, you have to be an adult under the height of 147cm (4ft 10 inches).
Many dwarves grow short limbs and have a short stature. This means that someone much older could be much smaller than you or I. There are more than 300 conditions resulting in dwarfism. The majority of causes are 2 disorders: achondroplasia and growth hormone deficiency.
Most dwarves like to refer to themselves as ‘little people’. For some, the term ‘dwarf’ is acceptable, but you must understand that the word ‘midget’ is offensive and unacceptable. This leads us to what I would call ‘dwarf persecution’. It is known that in few pubs there is a so-called sport known as dwarf throwing. The sport dwarf throwing does give the dwarf a bit of cash-but is that really what they want to be doing? You wouldn’t have a baby throwing competition would you? It is forgetting the fact that dwarves are just humans like you and I and treating them inhumanely because of their physical appearance.
Have you ever thought about how hard it must be for a little person to have a normal working or school life? Just getting up to the stairs take some time for a person with dwarfism- it takes two of their steps to catch up with one of ours-and that’s not even the start! If you picture a job in an office block in a busy city where a lot of people end up working, and then you picture it from the point of view of a dwarf, it’s really quite hard to imagine. Some might travel on the bus or get a taxi to work, and this can be very difficult for someone so small. There are also complaints about people using dwarves like public property. They say people take pictures of them to show to their friends and sometimes even laugh out loud. There are a lot of children who do this-but some are adults-you would have thought they’d have enough maturity to accept someone’s appearance and disability! A lot of dwarves also turn out with low incomes due to social and institutionalised discrimination. There are a lot of problems with different jobs for the sake of being able to reach things. This is like invisible discrimination-having accessible houses and buildings for dwarves to live in; crowds-crossing the street can be difficult if someone’s in a hurry as they may not see you. And like I said-office jobs and getting two and fro from work can be a big thing to a little person, for example; they wouldn’t be able to see out of the window to know where they were, and they wouldn’t be able to reach door handles either.
People say that dwarfism is not a disability. Hands up who agrees with this?
In actual fact, it should be. Things I would find easy like going to the bathroom or reaching buttons in lifts are made so much harder. This is why there is difficulty accessing housing. It’s made harder through lack of awareness from many service providers and councils. It is harder for housing because everything needs to be lowered. A person with dwarfism may not be able to cook food or go to the toilet because it’s too high. A dwarf quoted: “a private landlord once refused to consider me for his property because he didn’t want a ‘dwarf’ living in it. Another said “Finding housing that is disability accessible has been one of my biggest challenges and as I’m getting older I need a place where I am not going to burn myself in an ordinary size kitchen with a hot pan and where I don’t need to pole vault into a bath tub!” This is another sign of invisible discrimination.
I know a little person myself; her name is Kiruna Stamell and is my idol for definite. However the way some people treat Kiruna when she’s out and about is completely unacceptable. She’s had people touch her for good luck, take a video of her until the point that she’s videoed them back asking them if they think what they’re doing is acceptable, laughing out loud and staring for much longer than needed. Actually she’s probably much cooler than them! Why be rude to someone like that when they’re not rude to you?
Kiruna works in comedy and acting and has featured in many TV shows, films and stage productions despite her disability and height. She has a lot of self confidence, she can tap dance amazingly, she’s brilliant at contempary and jazz dance and when it comes to performing, she’s a real star. The other weekend, I was lucky to have been invited to one of her shows up in Birmingham. The play of ‘the lost happy endings’ used sign language for singing and acting and Kiruna played the evil witch with her amazing dance of fury and death. Recently Kiruna has been on a TV series called ‘life’s too short’ that you might have seen, and she has also played the teacher of Bianca’s son in East enders when they go to parents evening. Before I wrote out this speech, I spoke to Kiruna and she gave me some useful advice that I have definitely used. I asked her if she’d like to be normal height, here’s what she said: “I am happy with who I am and I wouldn’t change myself, what I would change is to make society, people’s attitudes and social systems more flexible and accessible for difference.” Kiruna is an example of someone who doesn’t let her disability stop her from doing things.
The reasons I have told you about Kiruna is that, 1. Her disability never gets in her way, and 2. I am extremely proud to say that in September this year, she’ll marry my uncle and become my aunt!

Stupidstitious, foreign customs and filming.

Have just learnt the hard way that violet (purple) is unlucky for artists in Italy. They should teach this in dramaschools  all over the world, just in case anyone foreign ever acts there.

Had to borrow a cardigan from costume because it is considered so unlucky. I googled this to confirm and google says “We advise against violet colour if you are an artist: in shows and performances it brings bad luck”.

So my lovely purple cardigan is going to be kept in the drawer at my hotel. And I have also noticed my mobile phone cover is purple too… Guess it is staying at home too.

I would like to know why this is the case for artists, that they should be denied such a colour. Please tell me… somebody tell me.

I wonder if it is that one day an actor wore purple robes on stage in Rome and someone from the church felt mocked so murdered him? In which case, that is unlucky.

Mirror Mirror on the wall who’s the CGI’d dwarf after all…

I am currently filming with the wonderful Giuseppe Tornatore. I think I can say that much because you can freely google that much online, but that is all I can say.

I could gush about all the reasons why I could potentially become over excited about this project but I won’t… as it is unbecoming… But the Legend of 1900 is a lovely movie… so check that one out.

But what I can talk about, is how great it is that I am in this movie and not being played by a tall actor on their knees, with computer generated graphics shrinking them to my height and giving them short arms and legs.

Snow White and Huntsman has just come out in the UK and people are singing its praises… It’s on the news and being heavily reviewed and I am sure it’s probably a great film but WHY OH WHY have they not cast – real little people actors in the roles of the 7 dwarfs? It drives me nuts! I don’t think they even auditioned any.

If they started replacing Black actors, or other ethnic groups this way, we’d think the human race had retrograded 50 years and cries of discrimination would ring out.

Ok read full rant from earlier on this issue…

A Little Commitment

We have had our week long journey (in front of a crowd) researching, developing and workshopping material…

Here’s a clip from some of our earlier experiments towards a finished show.

I’m gonna say something…

I’ve just been trawling the internet and reading lots of bitchy stuff about Kate Middleton.

I have nothing negative to say about her and I can honestly say I think she’s very pretty. In fact, she is probably very lovely too, but who knows, because unless you actually know her, you don’t know her.

I say this as someone who gets recognised as an actress every now and then by people who assume an over familiarity but can’t pronounce my name correctly (that’s my test btw), if you ever hit me up for a photo.

I think the bitchiness and criticism of ‘Kate as lazy’, is coming from a jealous, yet confused place. Jealous because this fairytale dream of becoming a princess is sold to little girls all over the world as if it is the greatest thing on earth to ‘achieve’. Confused, because we all (if we’re honest) can’t imagine anything worse.

You become rich and ‘powerful’ because of the man you marry and paradoxically become innocuous, hyper-’womanly’ and passive, judged on external appearances only, probably becoming one of the most objectified women in the world, and refered to as breeding stock, as if you were a pedigree or race horse.

Being a princess is – I imagine – deeply dissatisfying.

You become a princess and you can’t be yourself. You cease to be a human being. And you certainly don’t fart or have an opinion… just smile and wave…

And to my horror, I have actually read it in the papers, that her main job is – apparently – to have babies. OMG, are we living in medieval Britain? Her womb is part of her and I don’t think should be public discussion.

I knew there was pressure on her to look nice and open buildings and launch ships etc. But this open social discussion of her breedability and ability to launch-a-baby person is just nuts.

My genetic condition would probably rule me out of consideration as future mother and heir-baby-launcher to the throne… Thank God… because I was worried they were going to ask me. Although, it actually is highly unlikely my child will inherit my dwarfism, not that’d I’d have an issue if they did. And a ‘little leader’ could help the nation reduce its carbon footprint. And you can say what you like about ‘little people’ about us, but we’re economical.

But to reduce any woman to being merely a pretty baby making machine, is quite frankly offensive! And I know the whole nation has an ‘interest’ in her womb but I DON’T think that it should! It is her body and not the Provence or Borough of any county, country or ‘public interest’ poll.

I also don’t think she should have to ‘get a job’ or work hard at being a member of the royal family, if being a house wife in Wales is what she wants to do… Why should she have to do anything else?

I am a feminist! And I am angry on behalf of Kate Middleton and her sister’s bottom, which has had way to much coverage, in the way women’s bodies are over scrutinised in the media; all the time!

Yes. You heard me. I AM A FEMINIST.

Having just read Caitlin Moran’s book, ‘How To Be Woman’… I feel full of the fuel that makes me one! I agree with lots of what Caitlin says… ‘specially her stance on pubic hair. I am not sure her stance on Kate Middleton’s womb.

However… I digress.. but only slightly…

My interest in Kate was piqued recently because I am quite excited about all things ‘Union Jack’ at the moment. Don’t get me wrong I am a loyal Australian and republican (not monarchist). But I am a little bit keen to explore my future Englishness as I am about to marry a Brit. And I am quite impressed with the variations and multiple incarnations of the Union Jack. Its many manifestations and colourful designs have got me abuzz. ‘Specially the ones in Paperchase.

But back to my feminist rant…

I would like to see some female role models in our society – not just the UK but all over the world – who got there because they’ve worked hard, they’ve studied or trained or explored and adventured and took risks… Maybe achieved something in maths and science. And it’d be great if they weren’t necessarily pretty.

I guess this goes really against the monarch and associated media power brokers. Who – as an aside – I wish would stop going to parties where dwarves are serving champagne in some sort of cliche’d attempt to make a boring party ‘cool’. Yes, I know, we dwarves make everything cool but I thought royal families stopped collecting minatures years ago!* – Read Betty Adelson’s ‘Dwarves; from public curiosity to social liberation’.

The constant objectification of Kate as a fashion icon, her weight, her face… and weirdly by extension her sister’s and mother’s bodies… bla bla bla… is the same old sexist crap that gets written about all women in the press.

It’s all part of the same bollocks (if you’ll excuse the misappropriation of male bits). Women being valued for their bodies, looks and having status because of who they married, rather than what they do, think or say… It gives me the shits!

And my emotional reaction to all this rubbish is rage, it is as basic as that. We can intellectualise it til the cows come home, but if women are only the summation of their husbands and hotness of their bodies, devoid of their own brains, feelings and ownership over their own wombs (whether they produce babies or not)… then what a load of crap we’re being sold ladies!

Kate is a WAG who doesn’t abuse the fake tan.

And if you read that above sentence and go, ‘awww Kiruna you are such a bitch… Kate’s lovely…’ then I say you are missing the point of my rant.

I am sure she is lovely. This isn’t about Kate the human, who uses a loo like the rest of us… this is about what makes a woman important in the media and society.

They focus on what she’s wearing, her weight and her face… and oh yes… these things are of interest because of who she is married to…

Show me a woman who is empowering because of what she does. This doesn’t have to be Middleton, just any woman… Any one of us who decides to stick our head above the trench wall and take one for the team… And lets do it, with or without marrying into it.

A move to the Midlands and a shoot for the Guardian

Well, I’ve had an eventual few months. Premiered ‘Why Dwarves Hate Christmas’ at the Adelaide Fringe Festival and learnt a hell of a lot about producing a stand-up show… and also doing your first ever full-length hour. Loved it all… but major crash course and experience. Can’t wait to do this show again :) and revamp, really put some pepper up it…

Had an awesome Engagment party in Sydney… very brilliant.

Returned to the UK from Oz, my Fiance goes into hospital (he’s out now). But that was when we were meant to be house hunting, so I had a couple of weeks of sleeping on mates’ sofas to be near G, while he was ill. Homelessness is not fun :(

Then epic task of looking for a place to rent. My access needs (low door handles, light switches and disabled access to the communal entrance of the building limited our choices for places to stay. So we stuck to the city centre where modern buildings had a higher chance of being disability friendly.

Hopefully, we’ve found a lovely little home… can’t swear we have it 100% sewn up yet, paperwork yet to process, but we have put our money where our mouth is…

Now, it’s a brief return to Brighton to visit the future in-laws, do a shoot for The Guardian and buy a bit of time before we do the big move, with trucks and stuff with all our belongings and set up home as a proper grown up couple in the midlands.

But the biggest news is that we are currently preparing for some public workshops to help us develop our next stand-up show, which has both Gareth and I in it, our first co-pro. ‘A Little Committment’.

Photo of Gareth and I taken in an autobooth in Berlin, 4 shots each slightly different.
